Postings: Training Papua New Guineans for Bible Translation

Back in PNG!

We’ve been back in Papua New Guinea (PNG) for nearly 3 months now!  A LOT has happened since we’ve gotten back, including our share of difficult times, but God is gracious and faithful through it all.  We are grateful for your continued prayers for our family and our Wycliffe ministry as we support Bible translation here in PNG.

Training Bible Translators

James has been involved in a number of different training courses for Papua New Guinean Bible translators and other missionaries in Ukarumpa (our support center):

Basic Computing: Many Papua New Guineans have very little experience with computers.  Basic Computing teaches them things like how to type, use a mouse, basic file management, and word processing skills.  Some Bible translators took this course as a prerequisite for the Paratext 1 Course.

Paratext 1 Course: Paratext is the software specifically designed for Bible translation.  It is an essential part of Bible translation all over the world.  James wrote/revised the Paratext 1 Handbook, which was used for 2 different courses in PNG in the last few months.  Exciting!

Publishing Workshop: The task of publishing a translation is very important.  This workshop helped teach some of the tools used in the publishing process and has enabled James to support the software used for publishing bible translations.

Discover Your Language: Helps Papua New Guinean Bible translators learn about the structure of their own language, enabling them to translate the Bible even more effectively.

Christina and the Kids

Christina is working one morning a week as a TA at the Elementary School and enjoying that. Otherwise, she is staying busy at home and with her involvement in women’s ministry here in Ukarumpa.

The kids are doing well and loving being back in Ukarumpa and with their friends.  They recently started using cardboard boxes to sled down the hill: who needs snow?!?!  Click on the picture below for a video of them sledding in PNG:

Prayer and Praise

  • Praise: We are adjusting well back into our life in PNG after our brief time in the USA for Julia’s birth.
  • Praise: Julia is a very happy and healthy baby.
  • Prayer: For good balance of all the different facets of life.
  • Prayer: For good health for our family.

Serving with you,

James and Christina
