Transitioning in Australia

We are almost to PNG.  Praise God!  We finished up our packing, by God’s grace and the help of family and friends, and left on our way to PNG on May 10.  We are now in Cairns, Australia, adjusting to the climate (hot!) and time zone (17 hours different from WA), and gearing up for our life in PNG again.

Remember this?!?!  James, Christina, Mikayla, and Laurel on their way to PNG in 2011

After the stress of packing, saying goodbyes, and leaving the U.S., we are very grateful that we have this time to decompress and prepare for this next stage of our lives.  Many people have asked how long we plan to be in PNG.  Our answer is “3 years, but it’s in God’s hands.”

Watching God Work

Over the time that we were home in the U.S., we watched God work in a number of ways:

  • He healed us from the traumatic incident that brought us home from PNG.
  • He provided a church family where we were loved and cared for and developed deep friendships, and that prayerfully commissioned us for this term in PNG.
  • He provided for us financially, through many of you, when we came home suddenly and had extra, unexpected expenses.  Thank you again for your involvement in our Wycliffe ministry during that difficult time.
  • He gracious provided for our return to PNG when our Wycliffe ministry budget was significantly raised just weeks before our scheduled flights.

Thank you!

We are so grateful for your participation in our Wycliffe ministry in PNG, through your prayers and faithful financial partnership.  We watched God work over this last month and are almost fully funded (just $150/month short of 100%).  This is a huge blessing for us and we are satisfied that God has worked and that He will sustain us in PNG.  THANK YOU for your part in what God is doing in PNG.

Prayer and Praise

  • Prayer: Our final flights to PNG and Ukarumpa (our support center) this Sunday and Monday (your Saturday and Sunday).
  • Prayer/Praise: Smooth transitions through all of our flights and travels.
  • Praise: All of our luggage has made it with us this far.
  • Prayer: For our adjustment to being back in PNG.
  • Prayer: For the Paratext Course that James is teaching in early June.

Serving a God who works in wondrous ways,

James and Christina

One Week Until Liftoff

It is hard to believe we’ll be taking off for PNG in just one week!  We are excited to be returning to the work that God has called us to overseas: training Papua New Guinean Bible translators.  Many of you take part in this work with us through prayer and financial gifts.  THANK YOU for being a part of our lives and our Wycliffe ministry.  It is an honor to serve on your behalf in PNG.

Praise God!

We are amazed at God’s handiwork over the last two weeks.  With our recently updated Wycliffe ministry budget, we had a shortfall of over $1000/month.  We are now only $320/month from being fully funded.  God is good!  Thank you to all who have prayed and who have committed to financial partnership with our Wycliffe ministry.

Packing, Packing, Packing

We are very grateful for the way that God has provided during these last two weeks and now we turn to the final days of packing and preparing to leaving for PNG.  We definitely need your prayers for these last days of decision making and final details.  We are pretty worn out and want to finish strong.  We are SO thankful for all of the help we have received as we prepare to leave.  We could NOT do this without the gracious and helpful hands of so many.

Grateful for a God who Provides,

James and Christina

P.S. If you still feel God leading you to financially partner in our Wycliffe ministry (monthly/quarterly/annually), we would be honored to have you join our team.  Please see the information below.

Encouraging Stories

As our partnership team continues to grow, it has been encouraging to hear friends share their excitement about how God is working in PNG, and also how God has been moving in their hearts to partner with us.  These stories are a blessing to us and bring glory to God.

God is Doing This!

Just 8 days ago, we emailed asking people to pray for our financial need.  At that time, we were over $1000/month short of reaching 100% of our Wycliffe ministry budget.  By Monday, God brought that number down to about $700/month.  Now, God has dropped it to just under $400/month.  We can clearly see that God is doing this!  He is sending us back to Papua New Guinea to continue serving and training Bible translators, who are working hard to translate God’s Word into their own languages.

We appreciate your prayers for the final few days: we’d love to reach our goal of 100% by April 30.

May 10th is Coming Up Fast!

As our departure date comes nearer and nearer (about 2 weeks from today), we are getting closer and closer to being ready to leave.  The house is getting packed up, last minute details are being taken care of, AND…

God is Moving!

God is moving in people’s hearts to partner with our Wycliffe ministry.  In the last few days, we’ve had a number of people sign up to financially partner with us, and a number of others express interest in doing so.  We are currently just under $700/month short of being fully funded (last time we emailed we were just over $900/month short).  It is wonderfully encouraging to seeing the gap closing and God providing.

Thank you for continuing to pray and considering how you might be involved in bring God’s Word to people in Papua New Guinea.  Please keep praying with us to reach our goal of 100% by April 30.

Leaving so Soon?!?!

We fly out on May 10, JUST around the corner.  Thank you for your continued prayers as we pack up and prepare for an overseas transition.  Since our email a few days ago, we’re $100/month closer to reaching 100%!  God is good!  Thank you also to those who have committed to praying for us during this time as we focus on reaching 100% of our Wycliffe ministry budget.

God is in Control

We are currently still about $900/month short of being fully funded.  While we do not wish to go back to PNG without meeting our full Wycliffe ministry budget, we are committed to going no matter what.  It IS stressful to live in PNG while not receiving 100% of our ministry budget, but we know that God is in control and that ultimately He will provide for our every need.

Thank you for praying and considering how you might be involved in the work of Bible translation.  Would you please continue to pray with us to reach our goal of 100% by April 30?

Postings: Excited to See God Work

Excited to Go Back!

God provided excellent plane tickets for our return to PNG; we leave Portland on the 10th of May! We are excited to be back in PNG to continue the work of training Papua New Guinean Bible translators.  Because of the training that James has done, Papua New Guineans have shared things like this:

  • “God sent you [here]… to teach us… You teach us like a Papua New Guinean!”
  • “We no longer have to wait for somebody else to do the work for us.  Now, we can do the work ourselves!”

Without the prayers and the financial partnership of so many of you, we could not do this work.  Thank you for partnering with us in giving the people of Papua New Guinea God’s Word in a language that speaks to their hearts.

Our Need

The ministry budget Wycliffe sets for our ministry in PNG recently increased significantly.  We are currently about $1000/month short of the new budget.  We know that it would be very helpful and wise to go back to PNG fully funded.

Would you please pray with us to reach our goal of 100% by April 30?  If you feel God leading you to financially partner in our Wycliffe ministry (monthly/quarterly/annually), please see the information below.

This is no surprise to God, so we are excited to see how He will provide, and we will keep you updated as He does!  Thank you for praying and considering how you might be involved in the work of Bible translation.

Postings: Update – Passports, Paperwork, and Documents

Visas in Hand!!

What should have taken 3-4 weeks is already done.  Praise God!

When we sent in the last of our paperwork for PNG in mid-March, we didn’t expect to get it back until mid-April. So we were (more than) pleasantly surprised when the passports showed up at our door just 1 week later.

Christina, Nathaniel, and Passports

Laurel and Passport

Timothy and Passport

Many of you may remember the nail-biting, faith-building experience we had with our paperwork renewal last time. It came down to the wire with us receiving the passports just 1.5 hours before we left for the airport. (You can read more about that saga here: 2013 Visa Saga.)

Christina with Passports (2013)

We are very grateful that there was plenty of time to spare this time around.

With lots yet to do before we head back to PNG, we are still planning on departing in early May. Traveling across states, timezones, and countries is always interesting. Thankfully, we have a travel agent who is able to help us find good deals for missionaries.

The next significant step is purchasing plane tickets, finishing our “last minute” doctor, dentist, and eye appointments, and packing up our house here in Washington.

Our Family

There’s never a dull moment around the house, or at the park (which our kids love to frequent). We couldn’t help but share some of our recent photos of the kids. They are growing up fast and learning so much.

Prayer and Praise

  • Praise: We received our PNG visas back, in plenty of time for us to get affordable plane tickets.
  • Praise: Packing is going well, with plenty of help from our church family.
  • Prayer: Purchasing our plane tickets.
  • Prayer: Packing up our house. We basically need to “touch” each item in our house: do we want to pack, ship, store, or donate it.

Much Love in Christ,

James and Christina

Postings: Passports, Paperwork, and Documents

Bring it on!

We submitted applications for Nathaniel’s passport and Laurel’s passport renewal before Christmas. We had them in hand by early January: SUPER fast! The next set of paperwork was sent to PNG about 1 month ago and is already completed. Praise God!

Next week, we should be sending documents to get our visas for PNG.  We’ve still got a ways to go, but we’re glad this phase is almost over.

Still on “The List”:

  • Booking Plane Tickets
  • Packing up our house in Washington
  • Final Doctor and Dentist Appointments
  • A bit more paperwork (how’d you guess?)

Thank you for your continued prayers as we prepare to leave for PNG.

In Him,

James and Christina

Postings: Estimated Departure Date

Three months… it feel like a LONG time, and yet it feels just around the corner.  We are planning on leaving for PNG in about three months, give or take.  In essence, we know that our time in the USA is coming to an end, but we still don’t have an exact departure date.

To bring you up to speed with what we do know…

  • Our paperwork is currently in transit to Ukarumpa via DHL. Estimated arrival by Feb 5.
  • Once in Ukarumpa there are two steps that have to be completed.
    • Step 1 should take about 1 month in PNG (this is assuming everything goes smoothly)
    • Step 1.5 should be instantaneous: once the paperwork is approved in PNG, they electronically transfer the approval to Washington D.C.  Can you believe it?!?!  Something instantaneous actually exists in this process!  :-D
    • Step 2 should take about 4 weeks in D.C. (what is the difference between 1 month (PNG time) and 4 weeks (USA time)?? Your guess is as good as mine) :-)
  • Then our passports with visas will be sent back to us.

That means that we *should* have our passports/visas in hand by mid April if all goes well.

We are already beginning the process of seriously sorting and packing in preparation. Hopefully by starting now it will help keep things from getting too overwhelming down the road. It has been hard to start what we know is going to be a major upheaval for our family, but it is necessary and putting it off any longer isn’t going to make it better. We have enjoyed having a home in the USA and now it is time to begin the transition period again. This is a period of time where we feel torn between two sides of the world: The sadness of saying goodbye to our friends, family, and life in the USA again while simultaneously feeling excitement/anticipation at returning to our life in PNG. Packing is so much more than straight up sorting/packing…it is a time filled with many emotions and a lot of energy spent processing through these feelings and emotions – both for ourselves and with our kids.

All of that to say that while we are in the throes of preparing for our departure to PNG, we don’t have plane tickets yet and therefore do not have a departure date yet. Our plan at this point is to buy plane tickets once we know Step 2 above is underway (hopefully the second week of March). And at that point we will look at plane tickets and buy whatever is most reasonably priced during the last week of April or first week of May (to allow for our paperwork to for sure be in hand well before we leave for the airport, instead of right before we leave for the airport like last time).

Thank you very much for your partnership with us and for your prayers for us and our ministry in PNG. Please pray for God’s grace and peace to reign in our lives especially during this time of transition and upheaval for our family (physically/emotionally/spiritually/mentally).
